The original Swampdog, Suki.
Hello! Welcome to Swampdog Farm! We are a home-grown native plant nursery that specializes mainly in plant species native to southern New England (MA, CT, RI).
I've been a lifelong, avid gardener, and hiker, and have worked as an environmental scientist for almost 30 years. I have gotten up close and personal with the wealth of New England's flora (and fauna). Those who know me know that I will go out of my way to stop, examine, and take a picture of a cool-looking flower.
For a long while, I had mulled about farming - first when I was five years old and wanted to be a farmer, then later out of our former home in suburbia, and more recently when we moved to an honest-to-goodness 1850s farm with lots of space for growing--Swampdog Farm, named after our now gone but never forgotten lab mix, Suki, who never found a mud puddle she didn't like.
A few years ago, I had the 'a-ha!' moment when I realized that I wanted to share my knowledge and love of native plants, and share the actual plants, with gardeners. In 2023, I began growing a bunch of native perennials and shrubs for myself and learning about growing and scaling up operations for retail. In 2024, I delved into the retail biz, participating in farmer's markets and other events.
I grow all of my plants at Swampdog Farm, and most of these from seed that I harvest from our gardens, fields, and forests.
Why native plants? There's a lot to say in answering this question. They're pretty. They're tolerant of our weather. Wildlife loves them. So many reasons! Have a look through our website. Email me at swampdognatives@gmail.com with a question. Or stop by the farm or a market sometime- I'm always happy to talk plants!
